A Being(s) in Love Story

Arthur MacArthur needs a job, and not just for the money. Before he dropped out of school to support his younger sister, he loved being a research assistant at the university. But working for a dragon, one of the rarest and least understood magical beings, has unforeseen complications. While Arthur may be the only applicant who isn't afraid of Philbert Jones in his dragon form, the instant attraction he feels for his new employer is beyond disconcerting.

Bertie is a brilliant historian, but he can't find his own notes without help - his house is a hoard of books and antiques, hence the need for an assistant. Setting the mess right is a dream come true for Arthur, who once aspired to be an archivist. But making sense of Bertie's interest in him is another matter. After all, dragons collect treasure, and Arthur is anything but extraordinary.

What a great read!

“Within this story, it’s clear that the dragon is the weak one. He is completely at the mercy of the boy, even when the boy is depicted in the story as his servant.” ~ Dr. Philbert Jones

The World

I’ve read many shifter books over the years. I’ve also read many books about dragons. But this is the first dragon shifter book that I’ve read and found it to be not only original but also very well done. In the world where this book takes place, all of the magical creatures (called “Beings” in the book) have recently come out of the closet: Fairies, Elves, Werewolves, Trolls, and Dragons.

The Interview

The book starts out with a job interview – young research assistant Arthur MacArthur is interviewing for a job working for a Dragon-shifter, Dr. Philbert Jones (“but please, call me Bertie”). Dr. Jones greets Alex while in his dragon form and Alex, who’s more than a little freaked out by the enormous dragon in front of him, fears that Dr. Jones is going to eat him. But of course, the dragon doesn’t eat him (which would have made for a very short story).

A Sexy Dragon?

Once back in his human form, we learn that Bertie, our dragon-shifter, is a brilliant (and sexy!) historian in the process of writing a book about the now extinct Red Dragon and he’s in need of someone to assist him in organizing his research and his books. He hires Arthur on the spot and Arthur can’t deny the strong attraction he feels for his new boss.

As the days progress, Arthur tries to make sense out of his feelings for his boss. It sometimes seems that Bertie is flirting with him – or is it just Arthur’s imagination? Arthur can’t be sure. But he vows to deny his feelings/attraction for Bertie and keep his relationship with his boss strictly professional, which turns out to be not at easy thing to do.

Burning for the Dragon

This is definitely a sensual, slow burn romance as the two characters slowly get to know each other and grow closer as the book progresses No insta-love here! The interaction and the slow build between the two of them is sweet and romantic and left me feeling as though I really knew them by the end of the book. I really loved the dynamic and the chemistry between the two characters.

One thing I especially liked about this book was that there wasn’t a sex scene every ten pages like you see in so many romance novels. In fact, we have to wait until nearly the end of the book until these two finally get together in a lovely, sensual scene — but it’s definitely worth the wait.

The Verdict

This sweet and playful story is not only about love, but also about the true meaning of treasure. It’s a story with plenty of heart, humor, and self-discovery. I was pleased to learn that this book is part of a series entitled “Beings in Love” and I definitely plan on reading more books in this series. Recommended!

A Boy and His Dragon (Audible Audio Edition) R Cooper Guy Veryzer Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

Great update to a very promising series! Normally series' like this that don't follow the same couple kind of irk me, but I adored Bertie and Arthur so much that I didn't mind at all!

I love the mythical dragon creature here. Definitely a more unique creature, and more original that many similar stories in this genre. I thought the tension between the two was delightful, and OMG the sexual chemistry was off the charts. I also really like the historian angle. I thought it made total sense and was really interesting.

I will say that this book, far more than the first in the series, felt more like the beginning of a series about this pairing. There were a ton of sort of open questions that make me feel really disappointed that we probably won't be getting another novel about these two. (The comments about Bertie's parents and how they'd take to Arthur, Bertie needing to procreate but not liking females--does that work differently for dragons?, Arthur going back to school--will that ever happen?, etc.) It seemed like there were a lot of big things casually mentioned that are just screaming for further expanding in future novels, to the point that I don't think this works super great as a stand-alone. I mean, it works alright, but the satisfaction of a story completely told wasn't so much there for me in this case. If I knew there were more novels coming about these two, this book would probably be a 5 for me, but feeling (relatively) certain that these fairly large questions are going unanswered knocks off a star for me.
When in despair over the growing heap of mediocre gay romances, where interesting plots and likable characters get bogged down in poor writing and editing and way too much simplistic sex, I return to R. Cooper over and over. Her language is sophisticated and her imaginative storytelling brings to life what is on the page.
Arthur and Bertie are simply beautiful characters-so well drawn, so interesting, and so well suited for each other. For all you aspiring romance writers, this is how you write sexy; the little details of attraction, the anticipation of the physical, the constant ambient heat and arousal, and then, finally, the delicious consummation. Jeesh! No cookie cutter sex here!
I wait eagerly for each new book in this compelling world of beings, and honor more than envy ( though there is a bit of that) Ms. Cooper’s splendid imagination and lovely writing style.
What a great read!
