Actor/Doctor An Autobiography, Part 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Milt Kogan MD, Milton L. Kogan Books Reviews
I love immigrant memoirs, and since this was written by someone from Camden, where I was born, I got the audio version. The author is the narrator and he does not read well. That was distracting. The story itself was pretty nondescript and not especially well-written (one I remember is a reference to "female daughter"), a typical coming of age boy story, but I see that there is a part 2 and 3 so maybe the others are better.
This book begins with Dr. Kogan's writing from the point of view of his Ukrainian refugees on his fathers side of the family and their trek away from the recent impoverished remnants of WWI, during 1917. Ukranian hoodlums were killing and raping Jews, food had become scarce, and scores of Ukranians had lost family members due to a recent flu epidemic. Milt's brave grandfather, Abraham Kogan, with a small group of other refugees, including his children Joseph (Yossel) and Irving (Isaac), was determined to leave Ukraine toward Budapest in reach of a better life for his family. On the other side of Milt's heritage, his mother, Mildred (Mina) Kleinfeld and her family sail on an ocean liner leaving Poland toward Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty for a better tomorrow and the prosperity of America. The explanation and writing of these chapters offers the reader a cultural glimpse of the life of early immigrants and paints a picture of these early struggles and hardships. Dr. Kogan clearly researched his family lineage for these chapters and weaves his Judaic heritage into the story. This leads Milt into explaining about his father's determination to become a pharmacist, and the life of a young boy growing up in a Camden, New Jersey. The pharmacy is equipped with sports magazines and a good old fashioned soda fountain for any child to adore! The impression of family members and life under a raucous Jewish family leaves Milt with fond memories of uncles, aunts, and best friends growing up. As an adolescent, Milt struggles with understanding the surfacing emotional distresses resulting in signs of depression with his young mother. These writings about growing up and maturing in New Jersey, demonstrate many of the struggles and hormonal challenges young men face throughout childhood, including athletic competition, defeat, and the confusion of sex, being chased by bullies, knocking a kid with your first punch, and overcoming the pressures of competition. These experiences are all shared in this first book....and believe me, from a man that was once a young boy with similar experiences, it is great to hear these stories shared through another perspective. I enjoyed the authors expression of these years growing up in Camden and thought the description of this era was explained in great detail. I suggest all 3 of these books to any avid reader.
As a disclaimer, I know the author, and I write my thoughts about his wonderful book candidly and without regard to our professional connection.
This is a charming book. As history, it captures the era just before my own time, in circumstances different from my own, but he transports the reader to the times and places of his narrative. His tales are heart-rending, funny, shocking, insightful and revealing. Honestly, I can't wait to read parts 2 and 3.
If you are interested in immigrant history, history of the US mid-20th century, humor, family stories, and just a frankly emotionally, moving, good tale - I recommend Mr. Kogan's book. As a bonus, the large type is easy to read, and the story flies along. Additionally, I add, if you ever have a chance to hear him read from his book, I promise laughing to tears, don't miss that chance!
Extremely interesting
